The August 2013 edition of National Geographic ran a great article on
the lives of the Lions of the Serengeti. Apart from the fact that
anything to do with lions is fascinating, the photos, as you would
expect from NG, were amazing. I particularly liked the black and white
landscape on page 34 & 35, showing a pride asleep on the rocks
waiting for a storm:

Stormy b&w landscapes are a particular favourite of mine, and
this one is spectacular, but also the representation of the lions in
mono make them stand out more - otherwise they would be lost in the
rocks.
On the following pages, 36 & 37, there is another b&w scene, a close up of a male and female resting:

I find that the use of b&w really enhances the texture and form
of the animals, emphasizing their skin folds and muscle shape.
Inspired by this, I had a go at my one, at the
Lake District Wildlife Park (the Serengeti being a bit too far!):
